On behalf of the entire Russellville Earth Day committee, I would like to thank each one of you for your participation in this year’s Earth Day event. Without individuals like you, this event would not have been as successful at it was. Everyone of you have given so much, you have organized your thoughts, created displays and sat (or stood) around for hours educating. Your efforts will be remembered and each of you should feel a since of pride in what you have done for our area.
As this was the first year for this event to be held at the city park with the education of the community in mind, the Russellville Earth Day committee would like to ask for your comments on how to improve future events. We will pass this information along to whoever assumes command for the event in the future. With that, we would also like to hear the good. If there was something you found exciting, encouraging, or just plain wonderful about the event, let us know that as well. We realize that with all new ideas there come kinks and with your input we hope to continue to make each Earth Day celebration better and better.
Again, thanks for all of your efforts and participation. We look forward to sharing Earth Day with you again in the future,

Welcome to Geocaching

To support the fun at the Russellville Earth Day, 6 temporary geocaches have been hidden on the City Park grounds. A geocache is a weather proof container that contains a log to be signed by the finder. Each geocache listed below has its own unique GPS coordinates, a short container description so you will know what you are searching for, and the difficulty (*) of the hide on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being the easiest). The geocaches can be found in any order.

Geocaching is a worldwide game dedicated to GPS users. For more information on this geocaching game, visit the website below. You can join for free and become a member of this growing organization.

The only rules for finding these temporary Earth Day Geocaches are:

1) Find the geocache and sign the log

2) Replace the cache as you found it so the next geocacher has the same challenge finding it.

Earth Day Bicycle Activities

ATTENTION CYCLERS!!!
We have some great Earth Day Bicycle Activities planned for you!

Bicyclers check in to the "Bicycle Stop" to enter a prize drawing.

10:30 am: Poppa Wheelies will be hosting a free "Bikes Maintenance" Workshop in the Workhshop Tent.

This will be followed by a "Tour de Earth Day" bike ride at 11:30am around the park and surrounding area. Fun prizes to follow!

Highlander will man the Bicycle Stop and provide "Bike Demo Program" throughout the day. They will also have Extra bikes for those of you who want to join the ride!

Sustainability Panel

Join us at 1:30 pm for the Earth Day Sustainability Panel!

Description:

Sustainability is a term that we hear often these days, but do we truly know what it means? The Russellville Earth Day Sustainability panel will offer participants a diverse approach to interpreting sustainability in every-day life. See how individuals recognize this term and apply it to a particular facet of living. Attendants will begin to understand the complexity of the term sustainability and how it is a concept that should play a larger role in all of society.

Each panel member will talk on their topic for approximately 10 min. Afterwards there will be an interactive audience question & answer session.

Re-usable Bag Decorating Contest

PRIZES:

DESCRIPTION:

Who?: 5th and 6th Graders

What?: Decorate Canvas Shopping Bags using the theme “Care for Creation”

When?: Judging held April 17 at the Russellville Earth Day event: Bags displayed at 10am Prizes at 1pm

Where? Russellville City Park behind the Arts Center

Did you know that:

Americans throw away almost 100 billion plastic bags every year, and only 1 to 3 percent are recycled. Plastic bags are not biodegradable. They clog waterways, spoil the landscape, and end up in landfills where they may take 1,000 years or more to break down into ever smaller particles that continue to pollute the soil and water.

Also, producing plastic bags requires millions of gallons of petroleum that could be used for transportation or heating. Animals are injured and can even die if they mistake a plastic bag for food.

We hope to resolve some of these issues by promoting the use of our own reusable grocery bags.

We will have outdoor clubs/organizations, environmental groups/organizations, animal shelters seeking pet adoptions and stressing the spay and neuter issue, guest speaker, music, food, kids educational activities, and of course all those educational booths.
